Pena, Cuellar take pro events, Cunningham wins Open at 2022 Capital City Classic
By Andrew Kapec
TALLAHASSEE - The '22 Capital City Classic is in the books! 11 of our 16 divisions were round robin or pool play. We held the first Squash 57 tournament in the Southeast. We had an incredible group of sponsors, volunteers, professional players, and interesting experiments and fresh ideas. This was a fun event to be a part of and I look forward to running more in the future!
I'd like to thank our amazing sponsors:
- Meridium Group & Phil Shoemaker
- Margo Scott Group Keller Williams Tampa Properties
- Florida Racquetball Association, Inc.
- Reaching Your Dream Foundation
- Dovetailed by Design & Mike Kinkin
- FSU COACH: Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching
- American Federal Benefits Consultants
- GOAT Sports Performance & Dr. Tim Baghurst
- Gene Fry
- Ralph Torres
- Chad Beacher
- Chris Eaton
- David Stob
- Hansen Family
- Habanas Boardwalk - the amazing Cuban dinner Saturday night!
Thank you volunteers and those who helped this tournament go:
- Tim Baghurst for brainstorming the Pro Rules Demo Exhibition and helping lead the pro division and Squash 57 event.
- JT R Ball for flying across the country to stream this experiment of ours and working with us on commercials, tech, scoreboard, and the wonderful LPRT stream
- LPRT for allowing us to stream our Pro Exhibition on their stream
- Chad & Stephanie Beacher and Brian and his wife for cooking, prepping and setting all our meals!
- Bill Duffack
- Darron Toston
- Greg Leibowitz
- Ralph Torres
- Samuel Schultz for helping with the tournament desk
- My dad, David Kapec
- Brendan Anthony for helping with our tablets and tech to ensure all our courts were streamed!
- Nick Knudsen for helping me with graphics, promotions, and this tournaments branding.
Thank you Professional Racquetball players for being willing to travel to Tallahassee to play some hard racquetball with experimental rules. They played their hearts out and gave us some exciting jaw-dropping matches and allowed us to see what racquetball looks like with some different rules. It was a joy to have you here. Thank you and good luck in your future pro events even though they won't be as exciting without rally and 1 serve rules
- Erika Manilla
- Noslen Jimenez
- Erick Cuevas Fernandez
- Abraham Peña
We were thrilled to try some new things out like:
- Rally Scoring, 1 serve only, & consecutive serving in our Pro Rules Demo
- Trying out Formulaflow's new ball. These things just couldn't be broken! Only one broken ball in our entire tournament!
- Every court was streamed on facebook under either Capital City Racquetball or LPRT.
- Due to lack of spectator viewing in two of our courts we streamed their matches on TVs in front of our stadium glass courts for maximum viewership.
- We successfully implemented a mic and speaker in our Pro court for our ref for best communication as our courts weren't built with speakers.
- Squash 57 event - this game is exhilarating and tiring and will wear you out, but at least you'll win your steps wars.
Congrats to our Division Winners!
